If you want to know how to archery hunt antelope, start with their eyes. Pronghorn live in open country and see very well, so the main options are a ground blind near water, a decoy during the rut, or a patient stalk using terrain. Keep shots modest, and check the rules on bows and licences, which differ between states such as Wyoming and Montana.
Waterhole blinds
A blind solves the pronghorn's biggest advantage, which is eyesight. NPS describes a herd animal that, when one individual "detects danger, it flares its white rump patch, signaling the others to flee." Out in the open, one pair of eyes spotting you can send the whole group running.
The classic archery set-up is a ground blind near water or a well-used crossing. Scout for fresh tracks and droppings, then set the blind so the likely approach sits inside your comfortable range. Brush it in or set it up well before you plan to hunt so it becomes part of the landscape. Our tree stand vs ground blind guide covers shooting from a blind at a near-level angle.

If you hunt public land, check the land agency's rules on how long a blind may stay up. We did not find a Wyoming Game and Fish rule on blind removal in the regulations we read.
Decoying in the rut
NPS says the pronghorn breeding season "begins mid-September and extends through early October." During the rut, older bucks defend groups of does and warn intruding males "with loud snorts and wheezing coughs," and if that fails, a fight may follow.
That territorial streak is what a buck decoy plays on. Set it in the open where a buck can see it, with you hidden close behind or beside it, and be ready to draw as he comes in. Not every buck will commit. Carry a decoy with care during any overlapping rifle season, and wear orange where the rules require it: Montana says archers using its archery-only licence during the antelope general season "must wear hunter orange."
Spot-and-stalk in open country
Use folds in the ground, dry creek beds and the backside of ridges, and move only when heads are down. NPS describes a "keen vision" that, together with speed, makes adults "difficult prey for any natural predator."

Shot distance and vitals
NPS gives adult pronghorn a shoulder height of 35–40 inches, with bucks at 100–125 lb and does at 90–110 lb. Keep shots inside the distance you can group reliably. Our guide to effective bow range explains how to find your own limit, and the heart-and-lung aim point is the same one our deer shot placement guide describes: tight behind the front leg and low in the chest, on a broadside or quartering-away animal.
Open ground offers few reference points, so range everything. Wyoming's Chapter 32 allows "range finding sights attached to legal archery equipment," and a handheld rangefinder works anywhere.
Tag and equipment rules: Wyoming and Montana
| Rule | Wyoming | Montana (2026 regulations) |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum draw weight | 40 lb for antelope (Chapter 32) | No figure in the regulations we read |
| Broadhead | Can't pass through a 7/8 in solid ring when fully expanded | At least two cutting edges and 7/8 in at the widest point |
| Archery licence | Required with your hunting licence during special archery seasons (Chapter 2) | Bowhunter education proof needed to buy a Bow and Arrow License |
| Antelope archery tag | Check the current antelope regulations | Archery Only licence, drawing only, either-sex, apply by 1 June |
| Orange clothing | Not required in special archery seasons | Required when using the archery licence during the general season |
Montana's 900-20 archery licence covers hunting districts beginning with 4, 5, 6 or 7. Rules change yearly, so read the current regulations.

Frequently asked questions
What draw weight do you need for antelope?
It depends on the state. Wyoming's Chapter 32 requires a longbow, recurve or compound of at least 40 lb for antelope, with a broadhead that can't pass through a 7/8 inch ring. We found no draw-weight figure in Montana's 2026 regulations. Always read the current rules where you hunt.
When is the best time to decoy pronghorn?
The rut. NPS says the pronghorn breeding season runs from mid-September through early October, when older bucks defend groups of does and challenge intruding males. A buck decoy plays on that behaviour. Check your season dates and any orange rules if archery and rifle seasons overlap.
Are pronghorn really antelope?
No. NPS says the pronghorn is "not a true antelope," which is found in Africa and southeast Asia. It is the surviving member of a group that evolved in North America, and the name "antelope" seems to date from the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804–1806.
