Wisconsin's bow hunting season for deer runs from 12 September 2026 to 3 January 2027 statewide, for both archery and crossbow hunters. In metro sub-units and selected Farmland Zone counties it carries on until 31 January 2027. Bows stay legal right through the November gun deer season, but you'll need blaze orange or pink whenever a gun hunt is open where you are.

This guide pulls the 2026–27 dates, licence steps, equipment rules, stand rules and registration into one page, all from the Wisconsin DNR's deer page, its new online hunting regulations and its 2026 news releases.

Rules checked on 9 October 2026; this isn't legal advice and regulations change, so confirm with the Wisconsin DNR.

Wisconsin deer season dates for 2026–27

The DNR's 2026 season table lists archery and crossbow as "Sept. 12-Jan. 3, 2027 or Jan. 31, 2027", with the later date applying "in metro sub-units and in DMUs with extended archery/crossbow season."

The DNR publishes a 2026 map of "Participating Counties For The Holiday Hunt and Extended Archery Seasons" on its deer regulations page. On it, for example, Dane, Sauk and Brown counties are shaded for both the holiday hunt and extended archery, while Barron, Dunn and Waupaca get the holiday hunt only. Check the map for your own county and DMU rather than relying on our examples.

What changed since last year

Only things the DNR itself has confirmed:

  • Dates shifted by a day. The 2025 season opened on 13 September and ran to 4 January 2026; the 2026 season opened on 12 September and ends on 3 January 2027.
  • The regulations went online. The DNR's July 2026 release says that "new this year, the DNR published an online version of the hunting regulations," with drop-down filters.
  • Check your unit. The DNR's September 2026 release reminds hunters that "there were updates to several Deer Management Units (DMUs) in 2025."

Bow hunting licence in Wisconsin

The DNR's regulations list what you need to hunt deer: an archery licence "to harvest deer with a bow and arrow," a crossbow licence "to harvest deer with a crossbow and arrow," and "a valid, unfilled harvest authorization." The two aren't interchangeable: "A crossbow is not legal to hunt under the authority of an archery license, and bow and arrow is not legal to hunt under the authority of a crossbow license." Buy an upgrade if you want to use both.

Deer licence (2026)ResidentNonresident
Archery licence$24$200
Crossbow licence$24$200
Junior crossbow licence$20$77 (via junior conservation patron licence)
Bonus antlerless harvest authorization$12$20

Buy through the Go Wild app or at licence sale locations. Each archery or crossbow licence comes with a bow buck harvest authorization, valid in any DMU statewide, and one to five Farmland antlerless authorizations depending on the unit you choose. Antlerless authorizations are tied to a zone, DMU and land type (public-access or private). Hunters 17 and younger also get a junior antlerless authorization valid statewide.

Hunter education. Anyone born on or after 1 January 1973 must show a hunter education certificate (or an accepted equivalent) "to purchase any hunting license." The alternative is the Hunting Mentorship Program, which lets hunters of any age buy a licence and hunt within arm's reach of a qualified mentor without taking the course first. We didn't find a separate bowhunter-education requirement in the online regulations.

Equipment rules for bows and crossbows

Wisconsin's general weapons rules allow hunting with a "bow and arrow, crossbow (min. draw weight of 100 lbs.)." For deer, the regulations make it illegal to use "any ammunition other than an arrow, bolt or bullet that is a single projectile of an expanding design," and ban arrows or bolts "designed or modified to explode or deliver poisons or drugs."

Other rules worth knowing:

  • Bows during gun seasons: a bow or crossbow "may be used by any person hunting under the authority of a gun license during any firearm season."
  • No laser sights while hunting (except for Class C visually disabled permit holders), and no shining a light at wild animals while carrying a bow or crossbow.
  • Crossbows in vehicles: a cocked crossbow must have the bolt removed when in or on a motor vehicle.
  • No group hunting with bows. The regulations say "group hunting is not legal for persons hunting with bows and crossbows."
  • Drones can't be used to hunt any animal.

What we couldn't confirm: the online regulations we read don't list a minimum draw weight for vertical bows, a minimum broadhead width, or any rule on lighted nocks or lighted sight pins. Ask the DNR (1-888-936-7463) before relying on them. Our guide to draw weight for deer is a sensible starting point either way.

Bow hunting hours in Wisconsin

Hunting hours depend on where you are. The DNR's 2026 shooting-hours tables list deer hours "from 30 minutes before sunrise to 20 minutes after sunset" for Zone A in each of its northern and southern areas, and hunters in other zones add the minutes shown for their zone. The tables are linked from the DNR's deer page; print the one for your area.

Blaze orange for bowhunters

The rule is simple and catches out archers every year: "When and where a firearm deer season is in progress, it is illegal to hunt any game, except waterfowl, unless at least 50% of the hunter's outer clothing above the waist is colored blaze orange or fluorescent pink." A hat, if worn, must be at least 50 percent blaze too. The DNR's youth hunt release spells it out: "This requirement applies to archery hunters."

In 2026 that means blaze during the youth hunt (10 to 11 October), the gun season, the muzzleloader season and the antlerless-only hunts, plus the holiday hunt in the counties that hold it. On DNR-managed land, a ground blind used during any deer season or hunt with firearms needs at least 144 square inches of solid blaze orange or pink, visible from all directions.

Public land, tree stands and registration

The DNR says there are "over 6 million acres of public lands across Wisconsin, with most of them open for hunting," and its Public Access Lands map shows them. On DNR-managed land, the stand rules are:

  1. No damage to trees. Screw-in stands and cutting shooting lanes count as damage; careful pruning of limbs under an inch thick doesn't.
  2. North of State Highway 64, stands and blinds may be left overnight from 1 September 2026 to 31 January 2027, with no more than two per hunter per county.
  3. South of Highway 64, they may stay up only from an hour before to an hour after daily shooting hours.
  4. Label it. An unoccupied stand or blind must show your DNR customer ID number or name and address.

On Managed Forest Law and other open private-land programmes, stands must come out each day. The DNR also warns against putting stands in or near ash trees, because emerald ash borer "has been confirmed in all 72 Wisconsin counties" and infested trees "may unexpectedly snap." Its 2026 opener release tells hunters to "always use a harness, haul line and maintain three points of contact"; our tree stand safety guide covers the full routine.

Registration: "Register your deer through GameReg by 5 p.m. the day after recovery," online at gamereg.wi.gov, by phone on 1-844-426-3734, or at a registration station. Keep the confirmation number, which starts with "W".

Frequently asked questions

When is the bow hunting opener in Wisconsin?

The 2026 archery and crossbow season opened on Saturday 12 September 2026, a day earlier on the calendar than the 13 September opener in 2025. It runs statewide to 3 January 2027, and to 31 January 2027 in metro sub-units and selected Farmland Zone counties. Next year's dates will be in the DNR's 2027 regulations.

What licence do I need to bow hunt in Wisconsin?

An archery licence to hunt deer with a bow, or a crossbow licence to use a crossbow. Each is $24 for residents and $200 for nonresidents in 2026, and you need an upgrade to use both. Hunters born on or after 1 January 1973 need hunter education first, unless they hunt under the Mentorship Program.

Can you bow hunt during gun season in Wisconsin?

Yes. The archery and crossbow season stays open through the 21 to 29 November gun deer season. You must wear blaze orange or fluorescent pink on at least half of your outer clothing above the waist while any firearm deer season is open where you hunt. Bucks are off-limits during the antlerless-only hunts.

What are bow hunting hours in Wisconsin?

They change through the season and by location. The DNR's 2026 tables list deer shooting hours from 30 minutes before sunrise to 20 minutes after sunset for Zone A in its northern and southern areas, and hunters in other zones add the minutes for their zone. Print the right table from the DNR deer page.
