A bowfishing boat for night shooting needs a stable, shallow hull you can stand on, bright lights aimed down into the water, and the safety kit every boat needs after dark. The lights do the real work: they let you spot and identify fish. Check your state's night bowfishing rules and the federal boating rules before you go.

Why night bowfishing works

MDC says many people bowfish at night, "when fish are often more active and more visible than in the daylight." Archery 360 adds: "Lights positioned around a shallow hulled boat make spotting the fish in the dark much easier." MDC also says fish are "typically more skittish" under a full moon and easier to approach on a new moon.

MDC adds that slowly cruising shorelines and still backwaters is "generally most productive," because most legal fish feed on the bottom. A shallow-running boat matters more than a fast one.

Lights: types, power and colour

MDC says bowfishers "traditionally hung lanterns or oil lamps over a boat's bow." Today halogen lights on a gas generator, or LEDs, are common, and bank bowfishers use handheld lights.

One bow-mounted example, the OMP Fin-Finder Splashlight, is listed by Lancaster Archery Supply at 600 lumens, threading into the stabilizer bushing, with "up to 4 continuous hours of burn time."

On light colour, we found no agency or maker data comparing colours in different water, so treat colour advice as anglers' experience, not tested fact.

Boat vs bank: setting up the deck

On a boat, deck layout matters as much as the lights. Before the first trip:

  • Aim lights down at the water, not into the shooters' eyes.
  • Agree who shoots from where, and keep the deck clear of coolers and cables.
  • Route reel line away from rails, wiring and the generator. Our bowfishing reels guide explains how each reel releases line.
  • Test the whole light setup at the dock before dark.

The bank is the cheaper start: a handheld or bow-mounted light and a reel. Either way, fish sit deeper than they look, as our guide to aiming when bowfishing explains.

Safety and the rules on lights

The Coast Guard's Boater's Guide to the Federal Requirements for Recreational Boats (revised November 2023) sets the basics:

  • Display navigation lights "between sunset and sunrise and during periods of restricted visibility."
  • "All recreational vessels must carry one wearable PFD for each person on board," and boats 16 feet and longer also need a throwable one.

Fishing rules are separate and vary widely. MDC's hours differ between lakes and rivers (see the FAQ below), and Texas Parks and Wildlife bars bowfishing on community fishing lakes and state park property. Archery 360's advice holds everywhere: "consult the state regulations."

You can browse LED bowfishing boat lights on Amazon or compare 12V bowfishing light bars. The OMP Splashlight is an example to consider for bank shooting. Still choosing a bow? Our Cajun Sucker Punch review explains a complete package.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a special boat for night bowfishing?

No. Archery 360 describes lights positioned around a shallow-hulled boat, and MDC says bank bowfishers use handheld lights. A stable, shallow boat with room to stand makes night shooting easier, but any boat needs navigation lights after sunset and a wearable life jacket for each person under Coast Guard rules.

It depends on the state and the water. Missouri's MDC limits bowfishing on impounded waters to sunrise to midnight from 1 February to 31 March, while rivers open to commercial fishing allow 24-hour bowfishing from 1 March. Check your own state's fishing regulations before you go.

What lights do you need for night bowfishing?

Enough light to see and identify fish through the water. MDC says halogen lights on a gas generator, or LED lights, are commonly used on boats, with handheld lights from the bank. It also warns that moonlight alone "does not provide sufficient light for locating and properly identifying fish."
